Highway 1 Brews, Gazos Creek Beach, A Winding Road

When you need a quick getaway for a burger and a little chill time on the beach, here’s a plan for you. Gazos Creek Beach is a relatively less-used beach south of Half Moon Bay and Pescadero. It takes a few more minutes to get there, but as always, I’ve got a suggestion for a great route through the mountains and a terrific food and drink on the way.

The Road there: I love a road through a forest, as you’ve probably gleaned by now. This one is particularly less-travelled and off the beaten path. From Highway 92 at I-280, take Highway 92 towards Half Moon Bay and turn left (South) on Highway 35 at the top of the hill. You’ll be on your way towards Woodside, but you’ll turn off Highway 35 before you get there. About 6.9 Miles on Highway 35 from 92 and you turn right (West) on Tunitas Creek Rd (Kings Mountain road is on your other side). Don’t blink or you might miss it!

Tunitas Creek Rd is a winding, narrow, shady road that gets you deeper and deeper into the creekside Redwoods. Beautiful drive for about 6.1 miles, then turn slight right onto Lomitas Creek Cutoff (this is the SECOND Lomitas Creek right, not the first). In another mile you will find yourself passing by the charming Long Branch Saloon and Farms (and wedding venue), and the fun-filled Arata’s Pumpkin Farm (check out the hay bale maze!). Another half mile and you’re at the intersection of Lomitas and Highway 1. This whole trip down the mountain might take you 25 minutes or so. Watch out for bicyclists and share the road! Turn left (South) on Highway 1 and proceed 17 miles of scenic coastal road to the Highway 1 Brewing Company. Look for the sign, right across from Gazos Creek Beach.

Food/Beverage: Highway 1 Brewing Company has some very tasty brews, of which I can personally attest to the refreshing aspects of the Ocean Breeze Tropical IPA, the Postmile 5.44 Hazy, and the Highway 1PA. They also make some road-trip worthy food, including a mean Chicken Sandwich, hearty burgers, and excellent fish n’ chips. All served on a cozy back patio that is sheltered from the elements that can sometimes get to you on the Coast. Plan on staying a bit, the owners and staff are terrific as well !

Hit the Beach! As you leave the brewing company, take a right turn onto Highway 1 and go about 100 yards to the left-turn entrance to Gazos Creek Beach. Bring some chairs and go set up by the creek that runs through the sand (great for dogs and kids and the young at heart). Or just watch the sunset with some friends. Bring layers of clothing!
